Leo Lion (age 17) is a teen artist and writer based in NYC. His work extensively involves theater, both as an actor and a playwright. Leo is also the founder and Artistic Director of a teen-run theater company, Firebird Youth Theater, which has received awards from National Youth Arts two years in a row (including two awards for direction by Leo). As of 2017, Leo has produced and directed four off-Broadway productions. Leo’s acting credits include work with companies such as Different Directions, Wingspan Arts, Homeschool Stage, and Firebird Youth Theater. Plays written by Leo have been produced by Firebird Youth Theater, Downtown Art, and Writopia Lab’s Worldwide Plays Festival.
Leo also writes in other genres: his award-winning short stories, essays, and poetry have been published by Imagine Magazine (2014), Teen Ink Magazine, and the New York Scholastic Awards Blog. Leo’s art has been exhibited by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Parsons The New School for Design, and Casita Maria/Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
One of Leo’s live-action films, School Skits, received a Clay Crow Award from the Roliki-Fest Film Festival in Moscow, Russia. His work as an animator has been discussed in the New York Daily News, and his animated film The Intergalactic Adventures of Bloop received three national prizes from the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (National Gold Metal, Best in Grade, Ovation Award for Film & Animation).
